Contractors performing Home Improvement work in Washington D.C. are required to maintain a license and surety bond with the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA). This work is defined by the DCRA as any repair, remodeling, alteration conversion or modernization of, or addition to, residential property. Per the Acts of Congress approved September 6, 1960, 74 Stat. 815, contractors must post a $25,000 surety bond for the duration of the two-year license period.
