To conduct contracted work in Illinois, plumbers and roofing contractors are required to be licensed and bonded. This surety bond protects the obligee and the general public from any damage caused by the principal’s (contractor) failure to comply with all rules and regulations. A claim can be filed if the principal causes harm to either the obligee or the public and, if the claim is valid, the surety may pay out up to the penal sum of the bond. Any monies paid by the surety must be reimbursed by the principal.
- $10,000 Bond – Roofing Contractor Limited (License Packet)
- $25,000 Bond – Roofing Contractor Unlimited (License Packet)
- $20,000 Bond – Corporation Plumbing Contractor (Bond Form)
Additionally, almost all contractors must be licensed and bonded by the county or municipality in which they will be working. These are the most common type of contractor licenses that counties and municipalities require a contractor surety bond for:
- General
- Building or Construction
- Wrecking or Excavation
- Electrical
- Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
- Masonry
It is recommended that you contact your county or municipality for specific information regarding the licensing process and the type of bond you will need to conduct business there prior to bonding.
