Contractors performing home improvement work in the State of Maryland are required to maintain a license with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission. The scope of work for these contractors includes: alteration, remodeling, repair or replacement of a building or part of a building used as a residence. Work done to commonly owned areas of individual condominium units is included.

In accordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland, Business Regulation Article, Title 8, contractors are required to obtain a $20,000 surety bond. The bond is issued in 2-Year increments, as specified by the Maryland Home Improvement Guaranty Fund.
