The Minnesota Department of Public Safety – Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) regulates and licenses motor vehicle dealers in the state of Minnesota. Anyone who wishes to sell motor vehicles in Minnesota must submit and maintain a surety bond with the DVS as part of their licensing requirements. There are two different bond amounts, dependent on what type of vehicles are being sold:
- $5,000
- Boat trailer, snowmobile trailer, small horse trailer, trailers with carrying capacity under 15,000 pounds designed to transport small construction or farm equipment, and motorized bicycle dealers
- $50,000
- All other vehicles
Minnesota motor vehicle dealer surety bonds protect individuals from monetary losses caused by the fraudulent or unlawful actions of the principal (motor vehicle dealer), and guarantee that the dealer complies with all rules and regulations set forth in the Minnesota Administrative Rules 7400 and the 2017 Minnesota Statutes 168.27.
